About Jonathan
With over twelve years of experience working in healthcare, first as an acupuncturist and now as a social worker and psychotherapist, I am passionate about helping clients take control of their health to become the best version of themselves. I value a holistic approach that considers the person within the context of their environment. As we work together, I will take a strengths-based, person-centred approach tailored to your needs. You already possess many tools; I will help you make the most of them as you heal and build your resilience.
As a father, partner, working professional, enthusiastic-though-not-always-gifted athlete, and friend, I have experienced many of the same issues as my clients. These experiences lay a foundation of empathy and support for our therapeutic relationship.
I graduated from The University of Windsor with a Master of Social Work and am a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). I completed my TCM studies at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TSTCM) and teach at the Ontario College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (OCTCM). I am a member in good standing with the College of TCM Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) and am registered as an R.TCMP and R.Ac.
Registered Social Work and Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, counseling, or often just as therapy, is an approach to treating mental health issues by talking with a trained mental health professional.
During psychotherapy, you and your therapist explore specific issues and how your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and moods affect each other. Talk therapy helps you learn to take control of your life, respond to challenging situations in well-adapted ways, and teaches you healthy coping skills.
As a Registered Social Worker, I am dedicated to providing high-quality therapeutic care. You can look forward to sessions as an opportunity to gain perspective, seek relief, and get support. I have experience working with anxiety, depression, grief, stress management, sleep disorders, major life changes, relationship issues, and chronic pain. My therapeutic approach uses a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and other approaches based on what fits your needs as they arise.
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic approach to health that seeks to treat the root causes of illness while also providing symptomatic relief. Acupuncture's main aim is to help create healthy patterns and transition the body into a calm and relaxed state to heal itself more effectively.
Chinese Medicine is an evidence-based medicine and is the oldest continuously practiced medicine in the world, dating back to the First Century BCE. TCM's understanding of the body is focused on the functional entities of the body and their ability to work harmoniously when the body is in a balanced and healthy state or their dysfunction when there is disease or health problems. TCM uses presenting signs and symptoms to find the pattern of disease and, therefore, treat the root cause. This diagnostic method is rooted in TCM's idea that to understand a person's health, you must study the functional aspects rather than the structures themselves.
Acupuncture is simple, safe, and effective health care. Acupuncture practitioners use thin, sterile disposable needles inserted superficially into specific areas of the body to help the body's ability to heal itself. Over the four decades or so in which acupuncture has gained popularity in North America, it has been proven by an increasing body of scientific evidence to be exceptionally safe and statistically effective.
As an acupuncturist, my clinical focus is treating pain in all its manifestations. Other focuses include stress management and related issues, including sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Acupuncture can help with digestive health, women’s health, as well as prenatal health and pregnancy-related concerns such as nausea, itchiness, threatened miscarriage, pain, depression/anxiety, pre-labor treatment, breech presentation, and induction.
